ELEVENTH HOUR: Building resilience amid the climate, environmental, and pollution crises https://mb.com.ph/2021/07/30/eleventh-hour-building-resilience-amid-the-climate-environmental-and-pollution-crises/ MAKAKALIKASAN MOVEMENT reiterates further that our resiliency against disasters is indeed dependent on how healthy our natural environment is. But beyond the obvious need to respond to the issues of "...climate disruption, declining ecosystems, and escalating pollution", we must start with the root causes of these anthropocentric problems. We need to adopt a new national ideology of communitarian deep ecologism and to bring this in governance by entering politics and becoming the next government to push state resources, authority, including police & military powers to implement the GREEN AGENDA to solve this myriad issues confronting the country and the planet today. The Movement supports the Makakalikasan (Nature Party Philippines) in its effort to become the next government as soon as possible and push the GREEN AGENDA forward. JOIN to ACT. Groups sustain opposition to local propagation of golden rice variety https://businessmirror.com.ph/2021/07/29/groups-sustain-opposition-to-local-propagation-of-golden-rice-variety/ MAKAKALIKASAN Movement weights in our support for the mounting opposition against the Goldern Rice GMO (Genetically Modified Organism) from farmers, community groups, concerned citizens groups and environmentalists over the approval by government of its commercial propagation amidst questions on its necessity and safety. We joined other groups in raising concern over the lack of transparency on the biosafety assessment of this GM rice citing similar observation on government not properly disclosing to the public comprehensive impact assessment and now exposing the Filipino public as live test subjects by approving commercalization. Makakakalikasan envokes the precautionary principle in opposing this kind of research & development; driven by private companies with govenment supervision & oversight lacking in transparency. The Movement supports the GREEN AGENDA #3 on Sustainable Agriculture that calls for the full shift to 100% organic agriculture with emphasis on conserving & enhancing soil & conservation of heirloom seeds towards food security with the shortest food mile by completing the agrarian & aquatic tenurial reforms and providing sufficient preferential support to the develop the green production value chains of small farming and artisanal fisher folks including the appropriate infrastructure and equipment from production, post production, processing, and marketing . This will also include the & the elimination of industrial, unsustainable farming within a decade . This can be done by shifting the country’s food production to 100% organic agriculture with full support to small farmers and fisher folks especially those within marine and farming protected areas. This will demand shifting away from conventional chemical agriculture, and rejection of genetically engineered crops or GMOs. This will also mean shifting increasingly to a plant-based diet away from animal-farming. JOIN TO ACT Commentary to this article:
$280-M WB loan deal signed www.bworldonline.com/280-m-wb-loan-deal-signed/ In this period of climate emergency & COVID-19 pandemic that exposed the weaknesses of urbanization, sustainable rural development is crucial for the survival of the country. De-urbanization is becoming inevitable. While the Makakalikasan Movement welcomes more support for rural development, we reject its financing via more loans. Sustainable rural development must be at the heart of national investment but its sources of finance must be from more sustainable sources like effectively focusing OFW remittances, foreign direct investment and local investments; including from BPO workers and other sources such as revenue from re-nationalizing mining, oil-gas and public utilities. The Movement supports the Makakalikasna (Nature Party Philippines) GREEN AGENDA # 11: Sustainable National Financing that calls for re-negotiations of all relevant domestic and foreign debts for debt reliefs & condonations while pursuing a decade with no new national debts. Instead, calls for strictly cleaning up our government procurement systems to optimize utilization and plug up leaks of public financing, nationalize; towards positive revenues, major essential public utilities and oil & natural gas resources. It also provide incentives to re-direct a large portion of remittances of OFWs as diaspora investment to key green industries and introduce a carbon tax on trade, fossil fuel and other environmentally destructive industrial processes & production as well as new and more taxes on products & services that leads to unsustainable & unhealthy lifestyles while reducing income & value added tax. IP leaders sign manifesto of support for extension of Bangsamoro transition period https://mb.com.ph/2021/07/30/ip-leaders-sign-manifesto-of-support-for-extension-of-bangsamoro-transition-period/ Makakalikasan Movement weights its support for the Indigenous Peoples (IPs) in the Bangsamoro areas' call for the extension of the Bangsamoro transition period. We share the concerns of the Teduray, Lambangian, Dulangan Manobo, Arumanen Manobo, Higaonon, Samah Badjaw, and other IPs in the BARMM that extending the transiton period will allow for the proper conclusion of the development and adoption of the Indigenous Peoples Code by the Bangsamoro parliament; among other tasks to ensure that the rights of the IPs in the Bangsamoro are sufficiently protected. The Movement supports the Makakalikasan (Nature Party Philippines)'s GREEN AGENDA # 9: Ensure Self Determination of our different "Peoples" & Final Peace Settlement. COA flags DENR over P46.5 million seized forest products https://www.philstar.com/nation/2021/07/29/2115926/coa-flags-denr-over-p465-million-seized-forest-products MAKAKALIKASAN Movement enjoins the Commission on Audit (COA) for taking admonishing the DENR for wasting confisgated logs worth PhP 46.5 Million. As these logs are not only valuable natural resources but represents lives lost in the battle of biodiversity against human greed, we encourage the COA to investigate further any graft and corruption that may be behind this neglect and more so the inability of the DENR to account for a large volume of this confisgated logs. The Movement reiterates its support for the GREEN AGENDA # 3 of the MAKAKALIKASAN (Nature Party Philippines) on Biodiversity and Habitat Conservation; which among others call for the the reforestation and forest protection of at least 40% of land area of all our major islands in the next decade. A major part of this effort is strong enforcement of our environmental laws including that of illegal logging. Confiscated logs are symbols of successful enforcement of illegal logging laws. It must not become a source of graft and corruption. As these are symbols of sacrificed lives of our forests and the living beings that live and depend on this forest, we must respect the proper disposition of these resources and not waste them; especially out of further greed and apathy. Relations with Asean are China’s priority, says foreign minister as US also courts Southeast Asia https://www.scmp.com/news/china/diplomacy/article/3142979/relations-asean-are-chinas-priority-says-foreign-minister-us Amidst the geo-political dynamics between the two superpowers, United States of America (USA) and Peoples Republic of China, the Philippines should instead look more into solidarity with its neighbors in ASEAN to whom we share more closely our culture, history, ecology and territory. The MAKAKALIKASAN Movement reiterates its support for the GREEN AGENDA #13 of the MAKAKALIKASAN (Nature Party Philippines) for a South East Asia Green Cultural, Economic and Ecological Security Solidarity that calls for ; among others, that the country's "...foreign affairs policy will be one of strong cultural, economic and SECURITY solidarity with the South East Asian nations and other close neighbors, protecting the integrity of our territory while pursuing peaceful negotiations & settlement to resolve conflicts on disputed territories among ourselves by championing instead joint development and conservation for future use..." This position calls for that sufficient support will be provided to allow the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine Coast Guard to have the capacity; in tandem with our neighboring allies to protect the integrity of our territory and shared disputed territories against external threats and not fully being dependent on our mutual defense treaties with western allies.
