Typhoons, weak or strong will bring disaster due to massive flooding caused by poor government climate actions amidst environmental destruction. It seems the effects of typhoon Vicky is far more widespread across the country and not just the more badly hit areas of Davao and Caraga in Mindanao. More than the impacts of strong winds and storm surges, typhoon Vicky is now affecting us more severely with massive flooding. In many parts of the country now, so many are experiencing floods; many drowning entire communities. Worse hit are thousands of stranded commuters, submerged houses, forcefully evacuated residents in many parts of Eastern Mindanao. But flooding is now being reported as well in growing parts of Visayas and eastern side of Luzon.
While a relatively weak typhoon registering only signal number 1; it brought long hours of continuous rains; in some areas a straight 12 hours exposing the extensive weaknesses of many of our communities today to absorb flooding. Party leaders in CARAGA noted that in Eastern Mindanao, rapid deforestation caused by mining, kaingin, clogged drainage system, irrigation canals, and unfinished construction of infrastructure projects that worsens siltation and aggravates the flooding situation everytime continuous rains besiege these communities. It must be noted that water flowing from Davao and Agusan del Sur goes to the Agusan Marsh Basin, which flows through the Agusan river, and drains in Butuan Bay. Because there are no longer big trees to hold water from the mountains, flood waters created their own waterways aside from usual rivers and streams. Thus, heavy flooding. MAKAKALIKASAN (Nature Party Philippines) sees this as yet another impact of climate change but made worse by poor government climate actions amidst environmental destruction. The Party calls on everyone to prepare for the anticipated relief and rehabilitation. We call on our CLIMATE EMERGENCY DECLARATION to be acted upon as soon as possible. These types of tragedy will persist if we do not.
