MAKAKALIKASAN (Nature Party Philippines) is equally concern, together with other green groups about how the increase from 30% to 75% carbon GHG emission targets that current draft of the country's NDC will be achieve with the continuing plans for more coal-fired power plants and therefor the low commitment for emission reduction from the energy sector. We will continue to monitor the emerging NDC targets of the country.

The study found: a) Reuse creates over 200 times as many jobs as using landfills and incinerators, b) Recycling creates around 70 times as many jobs as using landfills and incinerators, c) Re-manufacturing creates almost 30 times as many jobs as using landfills and incinerators. Illegal wildlife trafficking is reported as one of the leading drivers of biodiversity loss and destruction of habitats in the ASEAN region. According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), wildlife and forest crime in the East Asia and Pacific region is generating around USD 19.5 billion every year, making it a ‘lucrative business’ that is often hard to detect. In 2020, government institutions and officials from the Philippines, Malaysia, and Indonesia successfully completed investigations and seizure operations against notorious wildlife traders, as well as illegal waste smuggling. Special emphasis on the impact to small farmers. MAKAKALIKASAN supports our 100% shift to organic agriculture within a decade by prioritizing support to small farmers and local organic food systems.

Farmers are finding it harder to consistently grow enough food to meet increasing demand. Securing the world’s food supply for the future, experts assert, requires us to tally the good and the bad in the current agricultural structure, including the infrastructure and technology in food distribution systems. Small farms, which account for about 90 percent of the world’s 570 million farms, are particularly vulnerable to changes in seasonal climate. Land tended by families for generations suddenly may become nonarable. A change in the timing or intensity of yearly rainy seasons or the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), for example, could bring rains or drought that wipe out a family’s crops. Every year, humans are bringing materials into the world at a higher rate. Concrete is the single biggest contributor to anthropogenic mass and it's a major source of greenhouse-gas emissions, suggesting that finding more sustainable alternatives could help curb climate change.
Read the full article here Plastic, with its unabated global production, is a major and persistent contributor to environmental pollution. In fact, the accumulation of plastic debris in our environment is only expected to increase in the future. "Microplastics" (MP)—plastic debris <5 mm in size—are particularly problematic in this regard, owing to how easily they can be ingested by marine organisms and eventually find their way to humans. But, it is not just the marine environment that contains MP debris. Studies on agricultural soil have revealed that MPs adversely affect not only the soil quality but also the physiology of soil organisms and, in turn, the interaction between soil and plants. Still, because most studies on MPs have focused on marine environments, it is not clear how abundant MPs are in different types of soils based on the agricultural practice (a source of MP) employed. Moreover, it remains to be determined whether only external sources of MP (sewage, wastewater, and runoff water due to rain) are responsible for the soil pollution.

But — news flash!—you don’t need a yard or vast tracts of land to promote biodiversity. Pollinators are more than happy to dine on native plants growing in pots on balconies or patios.
